Smoke vents are openings in the roof of a building that allow smoke, hot air, and noxious gases to escape in the event of a fire. These are often required by fire and life safety building codes or due to other regulations, so it is important to ensure your industrial space is compliant. How Smoke Vents Work
Smoke inhalation is often a more pressing danger during a fire-related emergency than the flames themselves. Vents create openings in the roof so any smoke has a path to escape from the building.
Some models use a fusible link, which means they open automatically once the temperature exceeds a certain threshold.
Others, known as drop-out smoke vents, have a dome that will drop out if the temperature is high enough. You can also select models that also have the added capacity to be opened via inside and/or outside manual release.
Smoke Vents & Daylighting
Some types of smoke vents can be used for the dual purposes of fire safety and daylighting. Depending on your needs, you may choose a model with our without this capacity. Which Buildings Need Smoke Vents?
It’s important to check the building codes for your industrial structure to determine whether smoke vents are required or recommended. Other regulatory bodies related to your industry and/or your specific business may have additional requirements for fire safety. It’s best to consult with fire safety experts to get their recommendations since each building and circumstance is unique. For example, smoke vents may not be recommended for some buildings with sprinkler systems.
